PC Gamer UK posted a brief Q&A session with ION Storm's John Romero, using questions provided by their visitors. Although these things have a habit of changing at the last minute, Microsoft has announced that the official release date for Windows 2000 is February 17th, according to this story on ZDNet. The final beta version will be released to Rapid Deployment Testers any day now, and despite the February release date, the product is expected to go gold before the end of the year. Kokak's Doom Page has been updated with the OpenGL alpha 0.06 version of ZDoomGL v1.18b, one of the ports based on the publicly released DOOM source code. This latest installment fixes a couple of bugs and adds new features like coronas, dynamic lighting and MD2 model support, with new menu entries and console commands to control them. 10-29-99 GamePower reviews Age of Empires II: The Age Of Kings. Kokak's Doom Page has posted alpha 0.03 of ZDoom GL, an Open-Gl compatible port of ZDoom. This new version adds the map, crosshair and intermission screens, in addition to other changes. As promised on their site, a new version 1.5 of the Bleem (AKA bleem!) PlayStation emulator for the PC is now available. The new release fixes a bunch of bugs, adds internal optimizations, and adds an installer/uninstaller. 10-26-99 Daily Radar reviews Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. There are six Quake III Arena screenshots on The Adrenaline Vault. Five of those shots are also on Daily Radar, spotted by the Shugashack, though it is on Stomped where I see Redwood makes the informed comment that one of the shots is not new. Included in these images are shots of the Q2 marine, the Orbb and Slash models, the Q3CTF level by Tim Willits, and a shot including the grenade launcher. 10-25-99 GamePen reviews Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. Version 1.4.1 of LxDoom is now available on the LxDoom Homepage updating this Linux port of the Doom source with what are described as "just minor patches and bug fixes." An email exchange with John Carmack reprinted on MacGamer's Ledge gives recommendations from the id Software lead programmer on the best video card to use in a Mac to play Quake III Arena. Word from John is "my view will be naturally be reevaluated when official 3dfx drivers exist." Well Rounded News has posted new screenshots they received from Activision, which show off the Orbb model and the female character from Quake III: Arena, as well as new screenshots from Star Trek: Hidden Evil, Space Invaders, and others. 10-24-99 Version 2.3 Beta 11, of QTracker, the server browser/MP3 player/HTML list generator has been released (thanks Redwood). This new version adds a slew of bugfixes, including specific issues with the SHOUTCast system and interaction with Quake II master servers. Version 0.4 of the Q3A - Total Control utility is now available for download from Borderfield Software. Total control offers a FunName Editor, a Config Editor, a Key binder, a Server starter, a Dial-up optimizer, and now, even a mini server-browser. 10-23-99 HardOCP has posted a little Q&A dealing with SMP in Q3Test, including details on how to enable it, the problems with Voodoo 2 cards, and even some benchmarks. NVIDIA has posted new reference drivers for TNT and TNT2 based cards. These are the 3.53 drivers that were previously only available for GeForce 256 reference cards. 10-22-99 A new version 0.91 of the Future Technologies mod for Quake II is now available. In addition to some bug fixes, the new release also offers some new graphics, and what's described as "improved gameplay." Future Technologies is a Quake II deathmatch mod developed in Germany that strives to make Quake II "more realistic and futuristic" (not that those two things logically mesh). The mod offers eleven new or changed weapons with seven new models and skins, and three new items that can only be carried one-at-a-time. 3D Spotlight's BIOS and Start Up tweak guide has also been updated. 10-22-99 GameSpy.com reviews Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. Version 1.0 of - glitter's Q2GUNFRENZY a single-player ACT LABS GS lightgun Quake2 conversion, featuring standard lightgun compatible Q2 as well as an Arcade Mode inspired by arcade lightgun shooters. Word is: "Although the GS system is required to play, anyone can download and view the included demos to see first-hand how lightguns can be used to revolutionise First-Person-Shooter games." The long-awaited downloadable version of Live!Ware 3.0 for the SBLive! is now available on this Sound Blaster Live! - Live!Ware Get Live!Ware 3.0 page. Thanks Brennon Thompson. The Win95/98 downloads are available in smaller chunks, or as one big 28.8 MB download, and several, well... smaller chunks. Along with his latest worklog, and discussion of the Q3 capabilities of the latest Macintosh computers, an update to id Software Programmer John Carmack's .plan announces that there will not be another release of Q3Test with bots, as had been planned. The next release with bots will be the full demo, to be released sometime after testing of the full game begins (for which there is no specific timeframe). Hot on the heels of his .plan update debunking the NiN rumor, id's Todd Hollenshead has conducted a brief interview with World Gamer's Front, discussing his background and what it's like to work at id id's Todd Hollenshead updated his .plan, debunking the reports that have been flying around regarding possible Nine Inch Nails music in Quake III: Arena. Here's the cold, hard, truth: To put this rumor quickly to rest, we don't have any
tracks from Nine Inch Nails in the current Q3A soundtrack. Trent spent most of
his time this year completing his latest album (you can still call them that,
right?), and is now preparing for touring, if he's not already doing it. TeamAbuses's Q3Tourney guide has been updated with even more tips on how to stay on top of the frag heap in Q3Test's designated tournament map, although it does warn: "Do not make the mistake in thinking that strategy wins on this map, it doesn't. If your opponent has great aim and can dodge reasonably well, it is going to be a one tough match no matter how good the strategy." Kokak's Doom Page has a new alpha version 1.18b gl(0.01) of ZDoomGL, an OpenGL compatible version of ZDoom. ZDoom supports the shareware Doom, and the registered Doom & Doom II. The page warns that "ZDoomGL is at an early stage of development, so a lot of bugs may occur." 10-16-99 SeemsLikeSalvation, a Nine Inch Nails news site, has posted a report from "a source inside id Software" claiming that Trent Reznor has contributed three tracks for the Quake III: Area soundtrack. Word of this was also hinted at in this month's edition of PC Accelerator, although neither report is 100% official yet, so don't be too disappointed if it doesn't pan out. Tech-Review: When and How to Format Your Hard Drive. A new version 0.2.8 of the XaniA Proxy for Quake II is now available. In addition to a bunch of features to refine teamplay, the proxy also offers some cheat preventions, since it performs checksums on the Quake II executable as well as models and sounds. There's a giveaway on Dukworld offering a Doom II box autographed by John Romero, Tom Hall, Jay Wilbur, American McGee, and Shawn Green. The new release of this deathmatch mod for Quake II adds new graphics, and improves the location damage added in the last release, and adds a new weapon (nailgun). Power Gamerz reviewz Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. 10-14-99 There first release of the Armageddon Device for Quake II is available on The Roseville website featuring eight new maps, new monsters, and new weapons. the plot features a race against time to find the deactivation code for a power shield on an asteroid heading for Earth. Where's Bruce Willis or James Bond when you need them? Mod Central Mutators is a listing of all the mutators available for the Unreal Tournament Demo. Glide Underground reviews the Card Cooler. 10-13-99 The PlanetQuake Mod Expo 99 is up celebrating PQ's Quake II mod lineup. ActiveWindows reviews Age Of Empires 2: Age Of Kings. The Gunslinger Quake 2 page has a new version 1.0 of this mod for Quake II that allows you to enjoy the action of the American wild west without the necessity of a Will Smith soundtrack. 10-12-99 A new version 1.29 beta 9a of OpenGL DooM Legacy is available on the newly-relocated OpenGL DooM Legacy Homepage. Happily Ever After Story Lines in the Action Genre on GameSpy.com is an article featuring interviews Marc Laidlaw of Valve Software, Niklas Pehrson of the Swedish developing team Refraction, and Graeme Devine of id Software offering their opinions on the necessity of a detailed storyline in action games. 10-11-99 GameSpot has posted a new, multiplayer enabled demo for Mechwarrior 3. This demo has three mechs, two new multiplayer levels, and a single player mission. Leadtek has announced that their WinFast GeForce 256 card will be available in a separate version with Double Data Rate RAM. This version will be priced $100 more than the standard board. ChipTesters has updated their weekly hardware price guide, which features a full list of processors and their prices. CNN - Police suspect killing was a Beanie Baby deal gone bad. 10-10-99 Today is the 10th anniversary of the release of DOOM II. The Q3Test guide has been updated on the newly relocated GODLIKE Quake III Arena Page. There are new version 1.0b3 Beta 2 Voodoo3 Macintosh OS 8.x Beta Drivers on 3dfx Gamers. The new drivers feature bug fixes to 2D acceleration code among other things. Word on the beta drivers is "They are primarily intended for use by programmers wishing to develop applications utilizing the Glide API on the Macintosh platform. 3dfx will not offer end-user support nor warrant any hardware used in association with these drivers." 10-9-99 3D Spotlight's Unreal Tournament Tweak Guide is online, offering some thoughts on improving performance by cracking open that intimidating-looking advanced properties tab and tweaking away. There are some new GeForce 256 Q3Test screenshots on 3DGPU.com showing off scenes from Q3Test on NVIDIA's upcoming chipset in side-by-side comparisons against the same shots running with the lower level of curve detail on some non-GeForce accelerator or another. There's an interview with Todd Hollenshead on the ViolentFemmes Q3 page chatting up the id Software CEO on a variety of topics, including his Texas roots, how he got hooked up with id, and of course, a bunch of questions and answers about Quake III Arena. Doomworld has a re-released version of id Software's source code for Doom, which was previously released, now available as a GNU General Public License release, which alters the terms of the code's availability. It is now theoretically legal to sell programs based on the code, provided the new code remains freely-available under the GPL. The maXtron main site has RiEvEr's port of his bot code to work in Kingpin: Life of Crime, Xatrix' Quake II-engine game. This first release of the port from the author of the ReDeMpTiOn Bot and the Licensed To Kill bot for Action Quake2 is intended as a base for mod authors to include in their own Kingpin mods. The new release has "the first version of the shiny new pathing system so the bots get around a lot better..." According to this bit of news on AVault, Intel has officially announced the name of their upcoming high-end processor that was previously code-named Merced. The new processor is officially called the Itanium, and is on schedule for a mid-2000 release. 10-7-99 There's a new sniper mutator on Unreality that adds rules applicable to sniper-only combat in addition to the removal of the other weapons, including "enhancements" as rewards for kills (represented by "cheesy icons") and on-screen messages detailing what kind of shot you just made (head, torso...). GA-Source reviews the ABIT BE6 II Motherboard. Microsoft sends word of a MechWarrior 3 Meltdown Tournament to be held on the MSN Gaming Zone offering over $100,000 in prizes(!) including four brand new Harley Davidson Fatboy motorcycles. There's a new version of Rock, Paper, Scissors (RPS) for Quake II on the Axis Productions website. In addition to some bug fixes, the new release of this server-side modification adds a capturelimit, an id command, autotext, and a rock, paper, scissors game-within-a-game. 10-6-99 The Hard Drive and Memory Tweak Guide on Tweak3D has been updated. A new version 3.60 of Name Maker Studio is now available, offering an updated non-beta release of this program that offers colored and fun name support in games that support extended ASCII characters. Apple has announced their new lineup of iMac computers, which now sport faster processors (350 or 400 MHz G3s) as well as a new beefier sound system from Harman/Kardon, ATI RAGE 128 video cards (with AGP 2x), an optional DVD-ROM, and even compatibility with their AirPort wireless networking system. 10-5-99 Slashdot reports Red Hat Releases Version 6.1. The official site for American McGee's Alice has been updated again, and now contains a new riddle, as well as the answer to last week's (which states the already public fact that the game is played from a third person perspective). The new shareware release adds the same Unreal Tournament Demo and Deer Hunter 3 support included in the just-released registered version of this server browser. 10-2-99 Redwood over at Stomped has posted two new images from Quake III: Arena, showing off Paul Jaquays' Q3DM11 map The images are available on Stomped's news page, or in Redwood's Q3 Status Article from the other day. 10-1-99 The Weapons Factory page has a new version 4.25 of the Weapons Factory mod for Quake II that adds TeamFortress-inspired class-based teamplay to Quake II. The client files on the new release are divided into an essential portion that's required to use the mod, and an optional portion that adds scripts, sounds, and other nonessential, but recommended portions of the mod. A new version of the Quake III Arena Server Snooper is now available, updating this Q3Test server browser for Mac OS X. The new release fixes the windows dragging code, and includes the program's long-promised source code. The GameSpy 3D site now has version 2.16 of the GameSpy3D server browser for download, which adds the ability to find Unreal Tournament Demo servers on the Internet to the list of games the program supports. The new release is for registered users only, a shareware release is expected "in a few days." The new version also adds Deer Hunter 3 support, just for my wife.
9-30-99 Latest version of Unreal Tournament demo is out and you can get it at the following mirrors: Patch: 9-29-99 Version 2.0, build 1035 of Webdog, the news and .plan tracking software has been released, and is available for download at its homepage. This version adds all kinds of new features, including the ability to make links to any file or web page in the program, and syncing with IE favorites. If you're already using Webdog version 2.0, it will automatically download and install it. 9-28-99 This page has some photos from a visit to id Software by Alex Caceres. Teamplay.Net has word of their inaugural Q3Test deathmatch tournament. The competition is four-on-four, open ping, played on Q3Test1. More details are on the site. The Future Technologies site has a new version 0.81 of this mod that looks to make Quake II more "realistic and futuristic," offering 11 new or modified weapons, and new usable items (currently there are three). SpYze TecHsiTe has version 0.48 of TweeQ3, a new program to help build configuration files for Q3Test. The program is in its early stages, and the author is eager for feedback. 9-27-99 Word on Computer Games Online is that a new beta of Roger Wilco's upcoming Mark Ic release is now available. RW is a program that allows real-time voice communication during multiplayer games, even over a modem. The new beta is said to have a "few simple bug fixes and is a better version for using with games that support (their) 'Easy Bake' integration." 9-26-99 A new version of Kali II, the server browsing IRC client, has been released, and is available at the official Kali FTP site. Chaotic Dreams has released a CTF enhancement pack for their CHAOS mod for Quake 2. PC.IGN reviews Prince of Persia 3D. GameSpot UK reviews Unreal Tournament. Voodoo Extreme reviews Heavy Gear II. A new version of MilkShape 3D, a low-count polygon modeller that can import and export Half-Life, Quake 2 and Genesis 3D models has been released. (hud, location tags, etc) 9-25-99 On the heels of their initial release, the Blast Chamber page has a new 16 player DM map for Quake II, and the release of Extreme!PAK for Quake II, which adds new weapons, items, power-ups, armor, HUD, sounds, and more, all for the price of a 12 MB download. Vortex of Sound has posted their writeup of the Aureal retail launch party in San Francisco that was held last night, and according to them, Quake III: Arena is going to be supporting A3D with full wavetracing. 9-24-99 There are some photos of a prototype Quake III Action Figure on GA-Source. There is also a post on the ReSaurus - Quake page saying they are gauging interest in creating a Quake II (not III) marine medic, but want to see how many pre-orders it generates (pre-ordering apparently does not obligate you to buy it). Registration is now open for The Frag 3, this October's CPL event that has a $10,000 purse for the winner of the Q3Test tournament. The official DirectX site has been updated, and now has DirectX 7.0 available for download, so head on over and go nuts. I understand this was holding back the Direct3D version of the Unreal Tournament demo, so look for that soon. 9-23-99 BoomGames reviews the CardCooler. The innovative WONSwap service, that allows easy up and downloading of user-created maps, models, and skins for a few different games, has been updated to add Quake II support. Word is at this point the service does not currently support Quake II models, but they will be added soon, along with support for StarCraft maps. 9-22-99 FilePlanet has a brand new look and now sports a new custom e-mail feature, which mails you the latest updates from whatever sections of the site you select. KT-imPAKt's Homepage has released a new map-pack for Quake II offering eight levels of various sizes, along with a server-side teamplay mod that offers map voting. The page has screenshots of the maps, as well as more information about the mod, which has been in development for some time now. 9-21-99 The Quake and Quake 2 News page on Mplayer has the news that Mplayer is expanding the free services they are offering Quake and Quake II players to included games on Mplayer hosted servers. Benefits to players' will now included guaranteed private matches and automatic player rankings. 9-20-99 Gamecenter reviews the Microsoft SideWinder Dual Strike saying calling it a "new way to play Quake," saying it offers "a real alternative to the mouse and keyboard." Computer Games Online reviews the Microsoft Sidewinder Dual Strike, saying "Microsoft's 3D controller is no better than anyone else's." The interview covers his long history in the industry, with specific questions about his days at Trilobyte (and its subsequent demise), as well as how he found himself at id. 9-19-99 Kokak's Doom Page has a new set of MD2 weapons for DoomGL. 9-18-99 There are no confirmations from Valve or Sierra, but a blurb on Next-Generation Online quotes "insiders at Sega" as saying an "Internet capable version of Sierra’s Half Life will appear on Dreamcast in the near future." Word is Sierra could not be reached for comment on the rumor at the time the story went up. 9-17-99 A new version of ZDoom, an enhanced version of Doom based on the source code release from a while back has been released. This version is labeled 1.18b. 3dfx Gamers has released the much-anticipated Unreal Tournament demo. The demo's a big one at 50 MB, but it can be downloaded from the mirror sites below. A reminder: this demo is for Glide enabled cards only, and will not run under OpenGL or Direct3D. A version that supports those is expected within the next few days. 9-16-99 Word from Microsoft is that Ensemble Studios' Age of Empires II Age of Kings has gone gold. The article gives hands-on impressions of the game itself and LAN netplay from the event. sCary's Shack has posted a brief e-mail he received from John Carmack, which confirms that the new skeletal animation system that is being implemented into the Quake III: Arena engine will not in fact be included in the next Q3Test release (1.09), as well as word that the next version is still "a bit off". 9-15-99 Creative Labs has posted new beta drivers for their 3D Blaster TNT 2 Ultra card, which are based on NVIDIA's 2.08 reference drivers, albeit with some minor changes (such as improved TV out for the ultra, my video card. HOORAY, finally). 9-14-99 The Big House has moved to TeleFragged. This site has plenty of Quake 2 DM maps reviews that you can look over. This site features in depth reviews with plenty of screenshots, also when Q3A is released you will start to see Q3A DM reviews at The Big House. 9-13-99 The maXtron main site has the debut release of Licensed To Kill for Action Quake2, which adds an AI bot to this popular Quake II mod. The early version is based on the ACEBot source code. The ZDoom page has a new version 1.18a of ZDoom, a freely distributed Win32 port of Doom. The new release is purely a bug-fix for a couple of glitches with version 1.18, and offers no new features. 9-12-99 ActiveWindows has gotten a confirmation from Microsoft that DirectX 7 has "gone gold" internally (in quotes since there's no gold pressing involved) and will be released to the public soon (they're reporting by the end of the month). The final version number, they say, is 4.07.00.0700. The Tech Zone has posted a review of a Pentium III 550 overclocked to 682Mhz. 9-11-99 According to this Be website listing about ECTS, they showed Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena running on BeOS. 9-10-99 Tweak3D has posted what they're calling "very rudimentary benchmarks" with a PowerVR Neon250 board, testing the hardware with Quake II and Q3Test. Since so many of you out there are currently enjoying your new Dreamcast systems, or eagerly anticipating getting one, I felt this story deserved pointing out. According to GameSpot TV, due to a manufacturing glitch at one of the four plants that make the proprietary GD-ROM discs that the DC uses, there are a number of faulty Sonic Adventure and Blue Stinger CDs out there (and possibly others, including Ready 2 Rumble). They put the figure at less than ten percent, but it could be more than that as this story is just now being reported. Among the fixes and new features is now an integrated colored name editor. 9-8-99 Inside Mac Games Magazine Interviews John Carmack In this exclusive interview with IMG, Carmack talks about Apple, Macs, the hot new G4's, and of course, how well they all run Quake III Arena. 9-7-99 gBi0Tch's Home Page has a new version 0.08 of his log analyzer, which parses logs for Q3Test and Half-Life Counterstrike servers. The new release adds Q3Test support, the preliminary "CLAN MANAGER," and more new features, as well as some bug fixes. Gamers who purchase two soon-to-be-released titles from NovaLogic will also receive a high-quality headset microphone from Labtec. For a short time, Armored Fist 3 and Delta Force 2 will ship with Labtec's LVA-7330 ClearVoice Head Mic, featuring Labtec's speech recognition-certified NCAT2 microphone, with a headband that can be worn comfortably over the head, behind the head, or around the neck. Voice-Over-Net lets gamers speak to each other rather than typing messages in games on NovaWorld, the company's free Internet gaming service. Armored Fist 3, a simulation of the Army's M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank, is scheduled for release late this summer, while Delta Force 2 will be in stores this fall. More information about Labtec and its products is available at www.labtec.com. 9-6-99 Pac-Man gobbles his way to the ripe old age of 20 years old today. nV News' Tweaking Quake 3 Test Graphics offers a guide to mucking around with the graphics in Q3Test, describing various settings, showing the impact of their use on your framerate with benchmarks, and illustrating their impact on the game's appearance with screenshots. 9-5-99 MapZone's Q3Tourney guide offers another strategy guide to the third Q3Test map. Q3Tourney, discussing proper one-on-one tactics for the map in tongue-in-cheek style. The first release of Pinger is now available on The Mod Shop. Described as a simplified console game server browser for Linux, Pinger asks you which game and mod you want to play, and goes out and finds the servers you are looking for, and can (of course) join the server you select. Pinger currently only supports Quake II, but more games will be added in the future. Strange Company sends word that they've released a fix for their patch for their strange Quake (1) movie Eschaton: Darkening Twilight to fix a problem had with truncated filenames (a full fixed installer is also available). In addition, they have released a Tech Demo "from the upcoming fully-lipsynched Eschaton: Nightfall Special Edition" of a new lip-synching tool for Quake II called "Lippy," that should help remove the Godzilla effect from Quake II movies when available. 9-4-99 Ahhhh….BetaNews has word of new ASUS P2B BIOS' on the ASUS German FTP site. There seems to be a new beta BIOS there to work on any P2B (my favorite motherboard). Stomped has posted an e-mail they received from id's Paul Steed regarding the possibility of skeletal animation being added to Quake III: Arena this late in the engine's development (as Carmack mentioned it recently in his .plan), so you can head on over an see what id's animator thinks of the prospect. A new version of GLSetup, the program that detects your hardware and automatically installs the OpenGL drivers you need has been released. This version (Public Beta v1.0.0.107) is dated August 31st (although curiously it's dated August 30th in the readme file) and is available as an ActiveSetup download (which only downloads the drivers you need) or a monolithic 43MB version that contains every single driver (this is great for networks, by the way). Borderfield productions has posted a new version of their Q3A - Total Control utility for Q3Test, which they describe as "the ultimate Q3A tool." It contains a FunName editor, a Key Binder, a Dialup Optimizer (they say it "can reduce lag with up to 30%"), a Server launcher, and a Config Editor that you can use to tweak your graphics, RailGun settings, HUD and much more. This is an updated version to a release that was not mentioned here because it violated the EULA, since the original version had a pak explorer, which was removed when they learned it was a problem. Team Abuse's Q3Tourney guide gives maps specific strategies to the third level in Q3Test, Q3Tourney. Thanks Matthew Rorie and Redwood. 9-3-99 Wantree Games World has released a patch for the popular recammed version of Quake Done Quick 2 by Zarathustra Studios that fixes a bug where the VWEP doesn't work. The patch is available in both Linux and Windows versions. Also on BetaNews is word that yet another new ICQ beta is available, as ICQ v3.19 Build 2569 is on the ICQ website. 9-2-99 Saw a note on MacGamer's Ledge revealing that the clamor for the Quake III Arena hats and mousepads that are being handed out on the Bus Tour has been heard, and these items will soon be for sale. 9-1-99 Alchemy Zone has received permission and reprinted an article from EDGE magazine about id Software. It interviews many people at including John Cash, Donna Jackson (id mom), and others. This interview was apparently done in the spring around the Q3test first release time. It's pretty lengthy and very interesting. Highly recommended that you check it out. There is a hilarious Quake 3 Advertisement in the October 1999 issue of Computer Gaming World. Check it out.
