NVIDIA has announced the MCPX, a second processor that they are providing for Microsoft's Xbox console, and in the future will be released for PCs and set-top boxes as well, signifying NVIDIA's expansion into non-video hardware. The MCPX handles audio, multimedia and broadband for the Xbox, and is capable of 4 billion operations per second. Here's an excerpt from the press release with the few details released about the chip:

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 2000-- NVIDIA(TM) Corporation (Nasdaq:NVDA - news) announced today that it is supplying the Media Communications Processor (MCP) for the highly anticipated Xbox(TM) video game console under the Microsoft® label. The MCP performs the highly demanding multimedia processing for broadband connectivity, communications, and breakthrough audio capabilities of the Xbox, announced at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose on March 10th.

``The Xbox MCP, also called MCPX, is the first product in a new category of media and communication processors that will power the 21st century broadband digital appliances,'' said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO at NVIDIA. ``Our vision is to leverage the power of the MCP to transform platforms such as PCs, game consoles, and set-top boxes into `residential gateways'. The MCP will eventually become a `network router on a chip', and distribute broadband content throughout the networked digital home.''

At the heart of the MCPX, is a pair of high performance multimedia DSPs, executing up to 4 billion operations per second. This is equivalent to the multimedia processing power of a high performance Pentium III. The processing power of MCPX will enable the Xbox to produce theatre quality 3D audio and super realistic 3D sound effects, while connecting to the broadband Internet for networked games. The MCPX is manufactured in advanced 0.15um 7 layer metal process and is the second NVIDIA processor to be featured in Xbox. The combination of NVIDIA's Xbox GPU and MCP will produce never-before-experienced 3D graphics, high definition video, audio, and broadband capabilities. The awesome technology inside Xbox will enable a major leap in videogame experience.
