A Bulgarian security expert found the flaw in the browser's Active-X control code. It allows arbitrary programs to be executed on a user’s computer during a visit to a web page, or upon receipt of Outlook e-mail. The arbitrary programs could be used for copying, overwriting, and storing data on the user’s hard drive. been happening. A rapid-fire cheat was being exploited, and was ruining the game
for many players. This was posted last night by Satan[GT-MaD] <fdye@home.com>
: The good news is we tested a sever side anti-cheat rez with much success
tonight. JEX was our first victim, lame ass cheater. Bad news is the server
crashed a few times cause of the object.lto file we were using in the rez. Have
to still run debug and it's getting too late to fix it tonight, the patch will
be made available to wraith and nova as soon as it's stable, hopefully this will
get posted on the planetshogo site soon for server admins. The cheat detects
rapid fire on all weapons and nullifies damage to all rounds fired that are out
of the normal fire rate. It keeps track of the bad shots which are too fast and
counts, as soon as the player has fired 100 bad shots he then takes 9999 damage
points, blam. If he fires again after that he dies everytime. SO LISTEN UP
CHEATERS WITH FAST FIRE REZ FILES your days are numbered. Thanks to Thorin for
the programming expertise. Graeme Devine said today: Q3Test 1.08!!! Go bring down your favorite Internet site. You MUST delete all previous versions of Q3TEST for the game to run properly! again to get Q3A as a modem pack-in on the DC, which I would love to do. A
console game with a fixed function network interface moving Q3A with really good
modem level networking and everything would be great. You'd get better
performance modem-wise on the DC, mainly because you wouldn't have a bunch of
other operating systems fighting for space and interfering with the network
capabilities of the system. I still think it's a good idea, and they basically
had a deal on the table which we were ready to sign and they mysteriously pulled
out at the last minute, perhaps because they lost a quarter of a billion dollars
last quarter and they just didn't have any money. I don't really know. An updated version 0.7 of Mortyr.Net's Mortyr FAQ is online with more new info added about the demo. It also covers other games as well. John Carmack has updated his .plan. The .plan is long, so here's a clip: The basic setup is that I have a modified version of
the lcc compiler that generates assembly files that are processed by a new tool
"q3asm" into a .qvm file that can be interpreted by q3. You can still
use normal dll's for debugging, then release interpreted code. You can release a
binary dll if you need some native system services (some networking stuff, for
example) or are doing very compute intensive work, but I strongly encourage
everyone to try to use the virtual machine. The interpreted code has two prime
benefits: portability and security.User mods done with qvms will automatically
work on mac, linux, and any other oddball ports that get released. A qvm program
cannot modify anything outside its private address space, and the "system
calls" to the game strictly limit what can be touched. I was scared about
the binary dll's in Q2, but rationalized it to myself that people running public
servers should be aware of the dangers. With Q3 allowing client side
programming, it just needs to be safe for everyone. 7-24-99 Version 1.03 of the Quake2 Server Launcher has been released, which fixes a tiny bug that snuck into v1.02.
