Voodoo Extreme interviews Kevin Cloud talking about Return to Castle Wolfenstein, as the id Software artist/co-owner is acting as liaison between id and Gray Matter Studios, the folks currently at work on the game. Topics include the Quake III engine game's use of the terrain rendering technology introduced in Team Arena, features of the AI, plans for a demo, and more.

There's a list of Linux Quake III Arena Known issues on the id Software site letting you know if any problems you and your penguin-powered PC are encountering are common, or unique to you (or at least not previously noted). The update offers applicable tips and workarounds, along with where to send feedback about bugs you are encountering that are not mentioned.

The official Black & White site offers a release schedule for various add-ons that Lionhead plans to release for their god-playing game over the next few weeks. They include a Music Interface, a Chat Facility, a Soccer game and more, most of them pending the release of the official patch through Electronic Arts, but today's add-ons consist of three new multiplayer maps that were released. The maps will automatically be downloaded and added to your map-list when you take the game online, and more information on the three maps can be found at their site.

A new beta 2 of the Night's Edge modification for Unreal Tournament is now available, updating this UT mod they describe as a "tactical simulator." The new release mainly addresses bugs in beta 1, and is available as either a full release, or a patch.

3D Realms has updated their official Max Payne site with eight new screenshots from the game. They're still only saying it will be out "when it's done," but considering that they are now taking pre-orders that should be pretty soon.

The WTW website has a new version 2.0 of the WTW log parser utility that answers the question "Who's the Winner". The new release includes installation packages for both Windows and Linux, and coinciding with this is also the release of the source code for the previous version 1.42 of WTW. There is also a note about a problem with RA3 that impacts the display, but not the stats, that will result in the release of a fix soon.

The official Eternal Arena site offers a new version 1.4 update for the Eternal Team Arena mod.

A version 1.60_A patch for the Strike Force mod for Unreal Tournament has been released. Due to problems with the 1.61 update, this patch reverts the mod back to version 1.60, while adding the new maps from the 1.61 release.

Today is the fifth anniversary of Quake, as the shareware version of the game was released on June 22, 1996.

Well-Rounded Entertainment is reporting that American McGee and fellow former id Software employee Dave Taylor are forming a new company named Carbon Entertainment. The new company intends to create properties that work in more than one medium, so whatever game they produce would theoretically be designed to be a movie and vice versa. Also mentioned in the news update is word that American has also signed a deal with Miramax that will have him producing and directing feature films, and he is also currently in talks to direct television commercials and music videos.

id Software's Graeme Devine updated his .plan with the news that he has posted a new version of the Quake III Arena 1.29f patch for Mac OS X.

ProMode.Org now offers a new version 99u2 of their Challenge ProMode Arena modification for Quake III Arena which features a few tweaks and fixes of problems in version 99u1.

Westlake Interactive has posted a news update, announcing that the "unnamed project" listed on their project status page is in fact a Mac OS port of Age of Empires II. According to their news update, the game will be published by Bold, a division of Destineer Studios. In other Mac gaming news, Aspyr Media has announced that they have shipped their Mac OS port of Tomb Raider Chronicles.

ProMode.Org now offers a new version 99u2 of their Challenge ProMode Arena modification for Quake III Arena which features a few tweaks and fixes of problems in version 99u1.

The official Strike Force site now offers a version 1.61 patch for this Unreal Tournament mod, as well as a new demo version.

Stomped checked in with id Software's Robert Duffy regarding the status of the next point release patch for Quake III Arena. According to Robert's response, id has been working on meeting their first internal DOOM deadline, but the beta release will be available "within a day or so," and contain lots of changes.

A new version 0.96 of ZDaemon is now available updating this client/server port of the original Doom source code. The new version is mostly to address bugs, though it does also add an option to turn off skin support on the client side.

The first release of Quake 3 Annihiliation is now available at its official site for the price of a 79 MB download. This is a full release that includes all client and server files, and a separate download with the intro video and theme song is also available. Here is the description of this mod:

"Annihilation is a Quake3 Total Conversion that changes the game from its original gothic deathmatch style gameplay to a World War 2 setting that aims for a highly team oriented strategy. Featuring a unique class and rank system makes players dependable of each other, not allowing any one man army kamikaze runners. Quake III Arena DC Maps Still Coming to PC on Gamers.com quotes id Software's Todd Hollenshead in saying PC versions of the Dreamcast Q3A maps are on the way, "real soon now."

Version 4.2 of the Eternal Arena mod for Quake III Arena has been released. This latest version adds a new game mode ("Flying Gibs") as well as new explosion and trail effects, bot AI tweaks and more.

After several delays, the eagerly anticipated Black & White developer patch has now been released at the official site. This unsupported 8.4 MB patch allows multiplayer only with players who have also patched their game, and it brings a huge list of changes and bug fixes to Lionhead's god-playing game.

Westlake Interactive has released a new Mac patch for Deux Ex, bringing that edition of ION Storm's acclaimed 3D action RPG in sync with the Windows version 1.112fm. The patch takes 34.5 MB to download and should install over all previous versions of the game. And in related news, there is an Q&A with Jay Franke on PC.IGN, quizzing the actor who voiced the lead character JC Denton in the game.

While it was previously not slated for an online release, the E3 trailer for Return to Castle Wolfenstein is now available for download from FilePlanet after all. The trailer takes 44.0 MB to download and offers nearly two and half minutes of high-res QuickTime footage.

NVIDIA has released new version 12.41 Detonator drivers. Like the previous Detonator releases, these drivers work on all cards with chipsets from NVIDIA's TNT, Quadro, Vanta and GeForce lines, and this latest release adds new improvements for Quadro users as well as support for Windows XP.

Loki Games offers the new version 22859 patches for TRIBES 2 for download from their ftp server.

As noted on both the official site and Silicon Ice Development, the new beta 2 of Urban Terror is now available for download from multiple mirrors. Urban Terror is a Quake III Arena mod "based on action and realism" and the new release is available in a straightforward ZIP file or as Windows and Mac installers, all clocking in around 68 MB.

Cowboy Tribes Scripting has the release of version 1.0 of SuperIP, a utility that will capture and catalogue game related links while you are in IRC (using mIRC) to allow you to easily query servers, save servers for easy future retrieval, join games, and even run a bot to tell your friends what server you've made off to after you are gone. SuperIP currently supports Starsiege TRIBES, TRIBES 2, Half-Life, and Quake III Arena.

Karnatos from Z-Axis sends word that they have posted a review of Silicon Ice Development's ultra realistic, teamplay based Quake3 Mod, UrbanTerror.

GameSpy 3D version 2.53 is now available for both shareware and registered users. This latest version adds support for TRIBES 2 and also increases the overall speed of the program significantly (both of these features have already been available for registered users like myself for some time now).

The official Black & White site has been updated with a list of changes from the upcoming patch for Black & White. The patch will feature 32 bug fixes (including fixes for a pair of save game errors that would crash the game) as well as two significant gameplay changes, one of which will allow those that have already played the game to skip the tutorials and creature selection if they choose to start a new game.

Linux Games has posted a letter they received from Timothee Besset, the project lead on GtkRadiant who is now in charge of maintaining the Linux version of Quake III Arena. According to Timothee's letter the different versions of Q3A all share the same source tree, and there will still be a Linux version of the upcoming Q3A and Team Arena point release, which will follow shortly after the release of the Win32 version.

If you missed the new Unreal II screenshots released at E3 last week, the official site now offers these five screenshots not only in 640x480 resolution, but also as downloads up to resolutions between 1024x768 and 1600x1200.

PlanetDeusEx has updated their news page with a letter from Warren Spector, where the designer comments on the controversial revelation that Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2 will appear first on Microsoft's Xbox console. Despite the many statements that have been made to the contrary, Warren says the two games will not be appearing first on consoles, and he reassures fans that ION Storm Austin is working hard to please fans of both games.

In a surprising twist, PC.IGN.com reports that Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3, the sequels to the critically acclaimed PC action games that are currently in development at ION Storm Austin, are now headed for a console release first before appearing on the PC. Thief 3 is targeted for the Xbox, while no specific console system is mentioned for Deus Ex 2.

Weapons Factory Unreal Tournament page has a new servers side version 106.1 patch for download to address issues that popped up with the recent 106 release. The new server files are backwards compatible with the version 106 clients.

Doom and Quake creator signs movie deal has word that American McGee  has signed a development deal with Dimension Films to create a movie based on Alice.

Kokak's Doom Page has a new version 0.66 of ZDoomGL, described as the same package as the 0.66 beta with the addition of a small Voodoo3 change. The new release offers virtually unlimited resolution support, and is said to be much more stable than the previous full release 0.6b.

A new version of the FragAndFlag:Arena utility is now available, updating this front-end that can insulate server operators from command-line parameters and config files by providing a simplified checkbox and buttons front-end for setting up a server running Quake III Arena, or any of a variety of Q3A mods.

There are some La Femme Nikita screenshots on GamePort.ru showing off this upcoming action/adventure game for PCs and "next-generation consoles" based on the TV series of the same name which was itself based on a movie of the same name (remember that movie Surge?). These are the first-ever publicly released screenshots from the game.

The LucasArts E3 2001 page has the official announcement that work has begun on Star Wars: Jedi Outcast-Jedi Knight II, obviously enough the sequel to Jedi Knight (which itself was also Dark Forces II, for those keeping track of the nesting sequels involved). As the earlier report stated, the game is being created by Raven Software with an assist from LucasArts, and will be powered by id Software's Quake III Arena engine.

The Deus Ex Multiplayer patch that brings the Mac port in sync with the latest Windows version is nearly complete and is beginning to be tested, and that "As part of this patch effort, we are also working on a separate update for users of SoundBlaster Live! cards which adds EAX support to multiplayer,". They have also posted a bit on the fact that they are the ones doing the Deus Ex PS2 port.

The official Return to Castle Wolfenstein website is live, offering a home base for this upcoming World War II first-person shooter from Gray Matter Studios.

The Reaction Quake 3 team has updated their website again with new screenshots, updates of their work, and even a new trailer showing off some of the stuff they have done.

A new version 2.3 of the Coliseum2 mod has been released. Of the bug fixes in this release, the one that should be of most interest is the reduced bandwidth usage of the runes.

The Weapons Factory Arena website has been updated with some new screenshots of their latest build-in-progress.  You can check out this cool Q3 Teamplay-based mod, which is billed as the "team fortress" of Quake3, right here.

Well today marks the opening of this year's E3 and since I am not going there I will have better news then those sites whose webmasters are going.

The Invasion team has released Beta 2.27 to the public. The mod has Marines that invade aliens and your mission is to bring back alien eggs. The new version offers new code bringing the mod into compliance with Q3A v1.27, adds new Sniper Rifle for the Marine class, and includes a new level. Check it out at the Invasion site.

The official Doom Legacy site now offers version 1.32 beta 1 of this Doom source code port for download. Billed as "major new full release," it comes in Win32, Linux, Mac OS/X, OS/2 and even good old DOS incarnations, and offers numerous improvements, changes and fixes in the gameplay, 3D acceleration, multiplayer and miscellaneous areas.

As before, this id-approved map pack contains the work of four mappers from the on-line gaming community. This time, three are conversions of previously released Quake III Arena Capture the Flag maps (Dynatron by Ned Man, Courtyard Conundrum by Casey of Threewave, and Smear Campaign by riscchip). The fourth map (PYRmageddon)is an original map, created for Quake III: Team Arena. The official site of the Annihilation mod for Quake III Arena has been updated with a bunch of new screenshots from the next version that should be released in the near future.

The Unreal Technology site offers a new beta OpenGL renderer for Epic's shooter, in which the only change is a fix for the "black screen at exit bug."

Registration for QuakeCon 2001 is now open. Also open is registration for the $500 Quest Counter-Strike Tournament, which will be held the weekend of June 2nd in O'Fallon, IL. In more immediate news, GameKult will be posting live coverage from this weekend's CPL event in the Netherlands

It's certainly been a while since the last truly bizarre Quake source port was released (although TextQuake will never be forgotten) so it's certainly good to hear that PanQuake is now available. PanQuake produces a full 360 degree panoramic view, which actually works correctly with mlook. The files, and some really weird screenshots are all available at its official site.

There's still more Star Trek on tap as there is a bunch of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars screenshots on Art of War taken from the game's closed beta testing.

Version 1.9b of Join@Once, a utility for connecting to game servers has been released. Join@Once allows users to click on special hyperlinks to join Half-Life, TRIBES 2, Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament servers, and this new release is a public beta. The UI Enhanced page now offers a new version 0.99a of their UI Enhanced modification for Quake III Arena, a Q3A front-end that offers simplified single player, LAN party, and server script creation support. The new release offers multiple map and bot selection along with several bug fixes, including working demos and timedemos, as well as under-the-hood code modifications that will allow the program to be more easily used on other Quake III engine games in the future, such as Team Arena or Elite Force.

A new beta 3 release of the Classic Quake Arena mod for Quake III Arena is now available. CQA aims to bring the gameplay and features of QuakeWorld to the Quake III engine, and this new version offers point release 1.27 compatibility and "a few new features and maps," and takes 27.5 MB to download.

Version 2.53 of the GameSpy 3D server browser is now available for registered users only. This version adds support for TRIBES 2, and they claim it's up to five times faster than the regular in-game server browser.

It was one year ago today that id Software announced production on Quake III: Team Arena.

Online Game Review has an interview with Tom Heaton, the creator of the King of the Hill mod for Quake III Arena.

A new version 4.2.5 of Q3ASC, or, the Quake III Arena Server Configurator, is now available. The latest version of this Windows Q3A server front-end adds Quake III: Team Arena support along with other tweaks and improvements.

Stomped has conducted an interview with Raven's Kenn Hoekstra, talking with him about their upcoming Quake III Arena engine title Soldier of Fortune 2.

Only nine months after the full game was released, a playable demo for Beach Head 2000 is now available from the online store of developers Digital Fusion. The 16.9 MB demo allows you to play one level in their first-person arcade shooter, and apparently includes the other 59 levels to be unlocked when you purchase the game. A patch to upgrade Unreal Fortress to Beta 1 build 600 has been released. Although it's a relatively minor numerical increase, the patch fixes over 100 bugs and adds four new weapons, nine updated maps and an entirely new gameplay mode.

Version 0.20 of glDuke, an OpenGL accelerated client for Duke Nukem 3D is now available for download.

German developers TriNodE Entertainment have released a playable demo of RIM - Battle Planets, available for download from PC Games. RIM is a 3D real-time strategy game that should arrive in stores in their home country shortly, and the whopping 139.7 MB demo includes three missions from the full game.

Fan page HitmanHQ has a Q&A with Jens Peter of IO Interactive online this afternoon. ION Storm has released a new multiplayer patch for Deus Ex through PlanetDeusEx, bringing their acclaimed first-person action RPG to version 1.112fm. There is a 35.7 MB full patch and a 4.7 MB patch for those who already have the previous version 1.109fm, and a full list of changes is available on the download pages. Additionally, an updated SDK is available as well.

Just Adventure interviews American McGee, talking with the creator of American McGee's Alice about the reaction the game received and his plans for the future. American mentions some things he would have liked to include in Alice had they not been on such a tight schedule, and he also says that he's going to be spending much of the next year in Hollywood working as the producer of Dark Wonderland, the Wes Craven film adaptation of Alice.

The official MechWarrior 4: Vengeance developer site offers a new version 1.5 beta patch for download, updating the English edition of this 3D action combat game. The 7.6 MB download can be applied to original game or the previous version 1.4, and addresses the multiplayer warping problem and fixes an FPU exception.

Reaction from id Software's Todd Hollenshead on the recently announced lawsuit stemming from the Columbine school shooting which has been revealed to include id among the defendants: After reviewing the lawsuit, Hollenshead found that the case is almost identical to the suit filed in 1999 after the Heath High School shooting in Paducah, Ky. All claims in that case were dismissed by a federal judge last April. He added, "As with the Kentucky litigation, their claims are utterly without merit and we will vigorously defend ourselves".

A new version 0.51 of T2Serverstat  is now available, which is a set of Perl scripts that will show your TRIBES 2 server status on a web page. The program offers a customizable HTML template and can run under a variety of configurations. Additionally, QStat 2.4c is required for any version of T2ServerStat later than 0.5.
