Today is my birthday. Also, please note that there will be no updates to this
page until Sunday as I am going to Wisconsin for my beautiful bride-to-be to
have a final fitting of her wedding dress.
Mirrors can be found at Quake3Arena.com
on the mirrors page
for the Q3A test for Linux and an update for the Mac version. This brings us
closer to the Wintell version release. Keep your fingers crossed.

We're about to update (tonight) the executables to 1.03 of q3test, there is a
seperate download for win32 and mac that just contains the updates, and the
main files have been updated as well. Win32 is still only available as a
dedicated server.
We're also releasing the Linux version of q3test, this will available as a RPM
and as .tar.gz.
If you have a G3 system, I highly recommend the new firmware update from Apple,
that gave us a noticeable (to humans) framerate improvement.
Here's the update list:
Mac specific
------------
improved networking stability
improved device scanning
improved speed
improved memory checking
improved sound latency
Generic
-------
global motd/update server
added drop shadow to field characters and fixed scrolling
fixed edge-of-bounce-pad misprediction error (server side)
removed broken weapon-stay dmflag
made menu gfx never picmip
cheat protect r_lightmap
cheat protect r_nocurves
clear sound buffer before any file IO
continuous scoreboard / ping update when tab is down
put version number on menu background
dim out behind floating menus
fixed server crashing string bug
adjusted scoreboard for 8 players

A new GL Doom
project has popped up to take the place of Bruce Lewis' version that was
unfortunately last in a hard drive accident. They already have an early version
for download.
Q3Test for the Mac will not work with the Mac emulator, as the emulator does
not run PowerPC code.
Remember, if you are running a Q3Test server, and would like for it to report
to a master server, make sure you start the server with +set dedicated 2
3-Fingers actually has a
way to explore a part of the Quake III Arena map that John Carmack demoed for
the Mac Expo last month. It sure beats looking at the AVI! The only things
missing from this part are the triple-damage rune, the railgun, and teleporter
models (they do work, they're just invisible). The revolving mirror, red fog,
curved surfaces, animated emblem, etc. are in this level. Download
here. You need v2.20
of Unreal to play this level!

SConfig has delivered more Q3A movie.
These are high-quality QuickTime movies of Mac internet play.

A .plan file reader writes;
However if I am in middle of combat with someone, and they suddenly stop
and press the talk button, I'm still going to shove the rail up their
ass. I can just see people using this to try to go, "hey l00ser, I was
talking" whenever they get killed while trying to avoid it in lame
ways.
Right. People deserve to get railed for pulling a cheap tactic like that =)
The point I'm trying to make though, is that when someone has just spawned in
with a talk bubble over their heads, or is off somewhere facing a wall with
their backs to the action, obviously not paying attention to combat, respect
their talk bubble =)
Apr.26.1999 @ 10:57pm
Quake 3 Rant
Ok, when someone is facing a wall, isn't moving, and has a talk bubble over
their head...
DON'T SHOOT AT THEM!!!
It means they;
a) Hit T to talk and are typing in something to say
b) Are in the console doing something
...and they can't defend themselves. People who consistently kill people
with talk bubbles (and I don't mean the type of people who hit you once out of
reflex, and politely say "Sorry" either) over their heads (heretofore
known as
"Typer Killers") are sub-amoeba lifeforms IMO. It's really frustrating
trying
to talk to people on servers soliciting feedback, and having my ass blown back
to Canada (Hi Mom) every time I'm typing something.
Thank you. I feel much better now =)

The Win32 version of Q3Test server, that's server , is
available at id's ftp
site. This will only allow you to run a Q3A server on Win platforms.

Of course not wanting to blow my own horn is completely out of the window
today. I am the best! I am the only person to predict the exact day of the
release of QUAKE 3 ARENA TEST. So far, it is only available for the Mac. You can
get it here:
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/mac/MacQ3Test.bin
http://www.quakecity.net/files.asp?dir=quake3&file=MacQ3Test.bin
Q3TEST is for TESTING new tech and multiplayer code.
Q3TEST is NOT the game "Quake 3 Arena".
Known Mac Issues
Sometimes the Mac build crashes in low memory conditions, we're looking for help
in tracking this.
The sound latency can be improved.
Currently the game will only run on the main screen in a multi-monitor setup.
The overbright bits we use to change the way lightmaps work in the PC build is
not currently in the Mac build.

I've written a message board for use in discussing the impending Q3Test
releases. It's primary function will be a central place for you to
post bugs so that we can quickly peruse the boards and see what some of the
main problems are. It's still in development, there are a few problems that I
still need to iron out, but it's mostly functional.
I'm interested in seeing how it performs under a high load. I originally
used MS Access MDB format, but became frustrated with file locking issues
with a minimal load of activity, so I spent most of the afternoon today
installing MS SQL Server 7 and adjusting the code to work with it. Coming from
a database background (Oracle at my previous job), I was quite impressed with
SQL Server 7. Really easy to set up, and the performance seems very good.
Anyway, if you want to beat on it, it's temporarily located at;
http://underworld.idsoftware.com/cgi-win/webcon.exe
If any of you would like to use that as a discussion forum, and generate
some data for the database, I'd appreciate it. If you find any serious bugs or
get any error messages, please post in the "Q3Test: Bugs" forum.
The board will be moderated by id staff to retain it's focus. For general
Quake 3 discussion, I highly recommend the Quake 3 messageboard at
sCary's Shack

We are finally closing in on the first release of Q3test.
As you have probably heard by now, the first release in going to be the mac
version, probably followed by the linux version, and only then the
windows version.
Some of you are busy getting all bent out of shape about this.
We want to get a lot of people playing with the test to find bugs and
offer well thought out suggestions, but there are classes of bugs and
suggestions that emerge in each order of magnitude of exposed testers.
If a given bug is going to show up when a thousand people have looked
at it, but we had released it to a hundred thousand people, then we are
going to have a lot of duplication to wade through.
The mac testers will find some obvious problems.
We will fix them.
The later releases will be better.
Even if we had the windows distribution ready to go right now, I would
still seriously consider releasing one of the mac or linux versions first
because it will make our tracking a lot easier.
The holdup on the windows side are the issues with updated driver
distribution. The game itself doesn't have any holdups.
We could do a windows release for just, say, voodoo2 owners and get some
of the benefit of a controlled release, but it wouldn't really work out,
because everyone would figure out that it can be made to (almost) work
on lots of other cards by tweaking some values. That type of feedback
would not be useful, because we KNOW that there are problems with most
of the current drivers. We have been working with all of the vendors
for the past year to get them all straightened out.
Glsetup is going to be slick -- just run it and it will Do The Right Thing
for your video configuration.
We hope it will be done soon, but there are factors out of our direct
control involved.
Don't be spiteful. This is just the beginning of the testing and
release process.
One conspiracy theory suggests that Apple is somehow getting us to do this.
What we have "gotten" from Apple is a few development machines. No
cash payoff. No bundling deal. No marketing contract.
I am looking at this long term. I want to see OS X become a top notch
platform for graphics development. I think highly of the NEXTSTEP heritage
and I might move my development from NT if it turns out well. There is a
lot of groundwork that needs to be laid with apple for this to happen,
and my working on the mac right now is part of that. Plus a lot of
complaining to various apple engineers and executives. :-)
To be clear:
At this time, there is no mac that is as fast for gaming (or just
about anything, actually) as a pentium III with a top of the line 3D card.
Period. I have been misquoted by some mac evangelists as saying otherwise.
The new (blue and white) G3 systems are very good systems in many ways, and
make a perfectly good gaming platform. However, a high end wintel machine
just has more horsepower on both the CPU and the 3D card.
A 400 mhz G3 performs about the same as a 400 mhz PII if they aren't fill
rate limited, where the faster cards on the PC will give about a 25%
advantage. A 500 mhz PIII with an appropriate card in 30% faster than
the best mac you can buy.
The multi colored iMacs, old G3 desktops, and powerbooks can play Quake3,
but the RagePro 3D acceleration defines the absolute bottom end of our
supported platforms. A serious gamer will not be satisfied with it.
Voodoo cards are not currently supported by the OpenGL driver, which is
very unfortunate because many serious mac gamers own voodoo cards. I
hope Apple and 3dfx will be able to correct this soon, but I certainly
understand Apple's prioritization -- obviously, good support for the OEM
video options is of primary importance.
The voodoo performance will still lag the windows platform by some amount,
but some strides have been made in that area recently, so I expect good
performance,
Gaming is not a reason to buy a mac, but Apple is taking steps so that
it may not be a reason to avoid a mac if you have other reasons for wanting
one.
MacOS still sucks.

The test is not coming out tonight, but we do have a Macintosh candidate ready
to go. If all goes
well tonight, it will be out over the weekend. The Linux/Win32 builds are not
yet ready.
The test version of Quake 3 Arena is just that, a test, and as such we here at
id software need
to have some controls over it as we start to test it out publicly. Without these
controls we
cannot actively track and improve the product in a manageable manner.
We wanted, and are eager to be completely "out there" on all
platforms, but the OpenGL drivers
the product needs for all the platforms are not yet finalized. By launching on
the Mac first it
gives the various 3D board manufacturers some time to get their Win32 OpenGL 3D
drivers certified
with Microsoft. We're using, and depend on, the latest and greatest drivers and
want to be able to
distribute those drivers for the Win32 platform.
The Macintosh market is smaller than the Win32 market, and has less
configuration options than the
Linux market. There is only a single OpenGL driver, and the hardware is
essentially always the same.
This is an ideal "controlled" environment for the initial testing.
Basically, if there is a huge
issue with the initial release we're exposing a smaller audience to it. This
turns out to be a good
thing.
The plan is to release the Macintosh version first, followed by the Linux
version, followed by the
Win32 version. We will release on the other platforms as soon as possible. We
will rev the other
platforms as we make new releases.
I hope you understand and agree with this decision/process. It is a good step
towards a timely
release of the full demo and retail product.

No news is good news they say! We're still working hard to get the test out. If
you could refer
questions to me (zaphod@idsoftware.com) regarding the test I'd appreciate it,
everyone else here
is plenty swamped. Obviously if it's just "when?" then that is pretty
hard to answer, because "when"
will be as soon as it's done!

Graeme Devine of id says in his
latest finger update:
We're getting closer to releasing the test version of Quake 3 Arena. It's worth
going
over our expectations from the test vs. the world's expectations from the test.
I appreciate
all the voice mails, faxes, and emails with suggestions, death threats, and
comments, and I
do read each and every one of them. I try to respond to a lot of them, but
obviously I can't
respond to them all.
At this point, we still have no release date on the test. We're testing builds
here and at
Activision and continuing to go through cycles. As soon as feedback from both
internal testing
and our testers at Activision dies down, we'll be ready, but while this is
providing heavy
reports, as it still is today, we're still not ready to come out with the public
test.
There will be two maps in the test; these maps will also be in the final
product. The feedback
we're looking for is specific to the technology in the test. We're pretty happy
with the design,
and feedback on things like weapon switch times, models, gibs, and so forth are
not things we'll
pay as much attention to as real issues with the technology. We're looking
closely at modem, ISDN,
and cable play to see how our new network code works, and how that works when a
bunch of different
connections are playing together on the same server. We're anxious to gauge
server load and use
with the maps we have to see how the server works under heavy use, and to make
sure we've got a lot
of the new client/server communication working reliably and securely.
That said, we do and will watch you play, read the message boards, and try to
gauge feedback. But
the main thing to remember is that this is a test technology build, not a demo,
there will be a
demo, we plan on a demo, but this is a test. A lot of you will want to wait on
the demo rather than
playing the test.
The test will be on all three platforms, Mac, Linux and Win32. We're still
working on minimum and
recommended specs. There are no bots in the test. We do plan on revving the test
once it's out at
regular intervals to get fixes out there.
There is no spoon.

In a Yahoo
news article about the parents of 3 victims of a Kentucky school shooting
spree suing video game makers over their violent content in games. They
insinuate that it influenced the shootings. While id
is not named in the article, they do mention Quake and Doom. Here is a quote:
The lawsuit claims that confessed shooter Michael
Carneal, a 14-year-old freshman at Heath High School at the time of the Dec. 1,
1997, shootings, was influenced by the violence in "The Basketball
Diaries" and by several violent computer games such as "Doom,"
"Quake," and "Mortal Combat."
I also found an Avault
article that says id and Apogee are
named in the lawsuit along with over a dozen other companies. I must say that
this lawsuit is absolutely ridiculous. Parents should start blaming themselves
for poorly raising their children instead of the games the kids play. It makes
me sick to see this kind of stuff and if they win this (I kind of doubt it
though), I may start making plans to move out of the country, Maybe to England
or something. (Just kidding)

There has been a successful Pentium
III 500 overclocking to 620MHz. Go find out how it performs and how they did
it. Spotted on AGN Hardware.
Sharky Extreme has posted a Voodoo
3 Overclocking Guide. They also have new Voodoo 3 3500 info. They managed to
overclock a 3500 from the default of 183MHz to 220MHz!
I finally got to check this PC
Zone Quake 3 Preview out. The have some Q&A with John Carmack and other id
employees as well as the goods on the game. It is not as long as I was expecting
but it does the job.
According to this news.com
article, Microsoft has cleared up some confusion about the Windows 98 SE
(Second Edition). Windows 98 SE will be an updated version of Win98 with bug
fixes and new drivers, etc. You can purchase that at retail for $89 if you do
not have Win98 already. Those with Win98 currently will be able to get the same
thing on CD for a sub $30 fee from Microsoft. All the bug fixes will be
available for download. I am glad they are doing this so people without access
to the OEM releases will be able to get the new drivers and not have to install
a million patches if they need to reinstall.

The guys over at QuakeFiles have
come up with a great tool called KeyAlert! (I am a bit jealous actually) It is
an automated system that will alert you when a particular file has been added to
their list. The big news for this one is the test release of Quake 3 Arena. So,
go the sign
up page for it and be e-mailed with a list of mirrors when it becomes
available.

In an article
on CNET Investor they discuss that both AMD and Intel are going to cut the
prices on their CPU's this weekend, prior to releasing their first-quarter
earning reports. I clipped the fun parts:
On desktops, the 500-MHz Pentium III and 450-MHz Pentium III, introduced
about one and a half months ago, will drop to around $635 and $412,
respectively.
The 450-MHz Pentium II will drop from around $476 to $397, while the 400-MHz
version of the chip will fall from $284 to $237. The 350-MHz Pentium II will
decline to $164. The Celerons will be cut as follows: The 433-MHz version will
drop to $144; the 400-MHz chip will go to $103 and the 350-MHz chip will drop to
$72.
AMD will make similar cuts. The 450-MHz K6-III will drop to $397 and the 400-MHz
version of the chip will decline to $237. The recently released 475-MHz K6-2
will sell for $213 while the 450-MHz model will fall to $158. The 400-MHz
version will sell for $103, and the 350-MHz chip will be priced at $68.
All prices are in volume quantities and are estimates. Retail prices likely will
be higher.

The Firing Squad has posted an
excellent review
of 3Dfx's Voodoo 3 3500. The review takes a walk through 3Dfx memory lane,

Someone sends along an email from Voodoo Magazine explaining that the specs
reported yesterday from their recent article, were speculative at best.
Here's the lowdown from Voodoo Magazine editor Cris Krameron what turns out to
be a session at the guess the features dart board, rather than actual hot scoop:
"Okay, let me clear this up for you. These specs were printed in a
sidebar to Michael Flemming's Voodoo 3 piece that appears in the Spring issue of
Voodoo (on sale now at finer newsstands near you). Michael basically thunked up
what he thought would be the most likely progression for 3dfx's next level of
technology. Several times in his sidebar, Michael included disclaimers like,
"I will have to resort to a mixture of conjecture and deduction..."
and "Please bear in mind that all of this is conjecture and does not
represent any kind of official statement or release from 3dfx Interactive."
3dfx is hard at work on the imminent release of Voodoo 3 and certainly
doesn't need any (more) headaches caused by me. Can you please whack something
up on the site that indicates that these specs were nothing more than blue-sky
ideals by one of Voodoo's freelancers? Before Greg Ballard or Michael Howse find
out and put a hit out on me? Feel free to quote this email in part or in full.
Thanks, man"

3dfx's official print magazine, Voodoo Magazine, has posted possible numbers
for their next generation 3D chip:
Highly Likely to Near Certain:
- Massive fill rates (around 900+ MTexels/s)
- 32-bit color rendering with no speed penalty
- Full-screen antialiasing with no speed penalty
- Much bigger textures (2048x2048 or larger)
- Texture compression
- Support for 64 MB or more local, on-board memory
- Multiple, independent pixel pipelines
- Quad+ multitexturing per pass (2+ textures/pipeline/cycle)
- 24 or 32-bit floating point Z buffer
- 4+x AGP and full AGP texturing (for bullet pointing)
- New blending modes: may be extremely flexible
- Glide compatibility
- 8-bit stencil buffer
- 2D/3D
- True single-cycle trilinear filtering
- Extensible architecture (a variety of configurations possible)
Probable:
- Real-time shadows and lighting with no speed penalty
- single chip design
- Some kind of specular lighting
- Scalable parallel architecture (2+ Rampages can work in tandem)
Reasonably Possible:
- High tap anisotropic filtering with little or no speed penalty
- Geometry acceleration
- true bump-mapping with no speed penalty
- MPEG/MPEG-2 texturing
- Surface tesselation
- Particle effects (for fire, hair, weather, smoke, etc.
The 900+MTexels/s is almost three times as fast as the fastest Voodoo 3!!!

Q3A test update: Our sCaRy friend
said " I know a lot of you are looking at the end of the month as a fixed
date for q3test, but we're probably looking to be within a few weeks of that
date rather than exactly on it. We're working on it; I just want to keep
expectations in line with reality. This is a test of Quake 3:Arena, not the
demo. With this test we're looking to see how well the brand new networking and
graphics code works, and while we've run this through a QA process here and at
Activision, this is not code that is of release quality in speed or gameplay.
Please do not look upon this as the "demo" of Q3A".

Q3A TEST
Our sCaRy little friend down around
the corner has some scoop!.. he ain't sayin' when but he's sayin, err confirming
that id will be releasing Q3test
sometime in March. They had said this before but haven't said much about it's
release lately. Any way sCaRy has some morsels for us:
·
ONE level. Just a single level. This test is just that, a test. A
possible "demo" of Quake3 a.k.a. shareware version may be available at
a later date though including more levels. That is just speculation on my part.
- ONE character class. My guess is because the character class stuff isn't quite
finalized, and id doesn't want to put
something out there that they aren't 100% happy with yet.
- Not all the weapons will be included. Just to leave you guys wanting more!
That and the same reasoning behind the character classes probably.
- The test level will include the majority of effects you will run into for
Quake3. Fog, mirrors, curves, etc. The intention is to test out the renderer,
which of course means they need to include as many effects as possible.
- The test level will be best suited for about 8 - 10 players.

It's important to clear something up before rumors get out of hand. Megadeth
is only doing one song for Duke Nukem Forever (DNF). They are doing their own
version of the Duke 3D title theme song (by Lee Jackson). It's very cool and
fits the attitude and mood of Duke, and the original song. Lee Jackson will
still be doing the remainder of the music for DNF, although a surprise or two
could pop up along the way. :-) We are very excited about the Megadeth cover of
the theme song and if we all love it, we know you all will as well. I have some
of the soundtrack on MP3 if anybody can host them for me let me know.
Internet Explorer 5.0 is supposed
to be released at 3pm PST today so keep an eye out for it.

Review Zone has posted a TNT2
vs. Voodoo3 article. I don't think there will be any shortage of these in
the next few months.

Kingpin Demo Released!
I know the size of this thing will scare a lot of people, but it will be worth
it. This game rocks. Be sure to look for the flamethrower, it's in there and
it's the best one I've seen in a game. While you're waiting for the 104
Megabyte download, check out the readme
at Gangland.org, which you can also check
for updated mirrors while I am busy at work today. Some of you may want to wait
a few days for the ftp sites to settle but definitely get this demo. Also, this
is definitely the game that shows you why a 32-bit card looks much better than a
16-bit card like the 3Dfx. Warning: this game has extremely strong language
so if you don't like that or are a parent, keep that in mind. Run this game
in 32-bit if you have a TNT or Rage128. Here is what I know right now:

by id and
I did not want to jeopardize my friendly status with them. SORRY ALL. L |
