The QuakeCon Website has the official announcement of the dates for QuakeCon 2002, this years installment in the giant id Software-sponsored LAN-fest. The official qBLOOD Website now offers a new version 0.90 of the BloodBath modification for Quake (1). BloodBath is a multiplayer conversion that brings the gameplay from Monolith's Blood to Quake. The new version adds menu support for the included maps along wit a load of fixes and changes.

There's a new version 1.04 of Skull's Runic Hunter on PlanetDiablo updating this offline utility that allows Diablo II players to easily look up item recipes as well as stats for items, gems, and other such stuff.

The Eternal Arena website has a new version 5.7 of the Eternal Arena modification for Quake III Arena, featuring several new features and changes based on user feedback as well as a new InstaGib CTF game type (making for a total of 20 types offered by the mod). Additionally, they are offering version 1.0 of the Rocket Duel modification for Q3A, which is a special subset of Eternal Arena, that, true to the name, emphasizes rockets.

Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year End 2001 Financial Results and Fiscal 2002 Guidance is a press release outlining the latest financials at this software publisher. The Weapons Factory Unreal Tournament site offers a new version 107b of this class-based CTF modification. This 14.2 MB beta release sports a large number of changes and fixes to the players classes and other parts, and there is also a new official map pack along with a third-party one.

You may already have seen an older version floating around (accidentally posted on the Vivendi UK site but revoked), but Sierra has now released the official Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza demo, (84.0 MB download) allowing you to try out the first-person shooter by Piranha Games that's based on the 1988 Bruce Willis action movie. This updated demo includes support for European languages, "fixes numerous technical and localization issues," and offers two weapons and several tools to help you make your way through four maps in the Nakatomi Plaza building.

Augmented Reality Quake (ARQuake) is an extension of the desktop game Quake, where they are investigating how to convert a desktop first person application into an outdoor/indoor mobile augmented reality application. The ARQuake game has been ported to their wearable computer platform and operates with GPS and digital compass as a means of tracking. The keyboard and mouse interaction with the game has been completely replaced with use movements and a functional toy gun (with recoil and sound effects).

PlanetDeusEx serves up two new concept images of Deus Ex 2, illustrating the first-person action RPG sequel in the works at ION Storm.

Blizzard sends word of new patches for Starcraft and its expansion pack Brood War, upgrading their RTS to version 1.09. You can use the 2.7 MB manual patches or the Battle.net auto-updater, and this release fixes replay issues, a victory/defeat screen bug, a latency problem under Win2K and more, and also adds LAN play via UDP.

Release 3 of the BeefQuake modification is now available. There aren't many details about the mod on their redesigned site (the screenshots reveal this is a Quake II  mod though), but they do admit to the inclusion of some new features, including stainmaps, improved particles, motion blur, and "smoother dynamic light falloff."

Dosfix 3 on Overclockers Australia offers the third version of this program that adds real-mode DOS support to Windows ME.

Eternal Arena 5.6.2 modification for Quake III Arena is now available.

ShellShock's Crater now offers a new version 02.01.26.00 of the Q3Offline front-end for Quake III Arena. The new release fixes some bugs, changes and enhances the way the map rotation works, and now allows for a mix of different game types in the same map rotation. There is also an explanation there about why the program cannot support Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor because neither of those games currently supports bots, but can used to launch RtCW servers.

A story on ShackES, citing a revelation on Cached.net, has word that the dates for QuakeCon 2002 will be August 15-18.

After almost a year of development, a new beta 5 of the Neo Cairo modification for Unreal Tournament is now available. The new release is a 92 MB download.

3D Realms sends us an updated demo of Max Payne to go along with the recent version 1.05 patches for Remedy's gritty third-person shooter. The demo is a 130.9 MB download which offers the same content as the original demo but incorporates the fixes from the v1.05 demo patch so that you don't need to get both if you haven't tried the game yet.

As can be inferred from the name, this is a modified version of the Quake II source code that offers the thrills and chills of 3D, provided you can come up with a pair of those classic red/blue 3D "glasses."

As promised, the QERadiant website has news that a new version 1.2.1 of GtkRadiant is available. This release of the level editor for Quake III Arena and its expansion pack and modifications has been expanded with support for Return to Castle Wolfenstein based on the recent SDK, and you can get a Win32 setup for just RtCW at 15.6 MB or a full Q3/RtCW setup for 21.0 MB. There is no word on when the Linux builds can be expected.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein Confirmed For Xbox on PlanetXbox has word that Return to Castle Wolfenstein is set to invade both the Xbox and Playstation 2 console systems. The ports are to be done by Raster Productions, with id Software carefully overlooking the process, just as they supervised the creation of the original game by Gray Matter and Nerve.

There is a new version 1.0 patch for Beach Head 2002, updating the recent first-person arcade shooter by Digital Fusion. The modest 875 KB download addresses a level 108 lockup and some level saving issues, and also includes the previous analog joystick support.

The Quake Info Pool has a new version 1.06a of their Ultimate Regular Quake Patch, which attempts to iron out any remaining bugs or irregularities in the original Quake. The new version addresses a problem that would stop the game just prior to the ultimate battle with the big shrub Shub.

id Software sends word that the SDK for Return to Castle Wolfenstein is now available for download from their ftp server. The 13.5 MB download includes all the tools needed for creating maps.

A new beta 2.31 of the Invasion Quake III Arena modification is now available, updating this conversion that pits space marines versus aliens.

Majestic players get a deadline is a report dropping the other shoe on Majestic, EA's unusual conspiracy-oriented game that has already, in effect, been cancelled. According to the story, the game will be taken offline on April 30, 2002, and "EA is encouraging players to play the game daily and complete each day's activities in order to finish the game" by that time.

Atomic interviews Kenn Hoekstra from Raven Software is a chat with the project administrator about the upcoming mercenary shooter sequel, Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix. Kenn talks about what will be similar and different between this game and the original, some of the new features like guns akimbo and the random scenario generator, the linearity of the single-player game and the new stealth elements, the likelihood of a playable demo, the multiplayer side of the game and their plans to support a mod community through the release of an SDK, changes made to the Quake III engine, their focus on realism, system requirements, and even more. Accompanying the interview is a batch of 19 new screenshots.

PC.IGN.com has posted a brief preview of Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, based on attending a demonstration of this third-person action game of murder and macabre machinations by IO Interactive's Thor Frølich. The article sums up the game's premise, describes some of the improvements and new features that will be finding their way into this sequel, offers impressions from a couple of its missions, the graphics and more, and comes with ten screenshots that mix a few new scenes with a handful of familiar ones.

It seems that iDSoftware enlisted the help of Even Balance, the creators of PunkBuster, to integrate their anti-cheat software into Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Gamespot brings us our very first news post of the day with an video clip of SOF2 in-game action.  Just in case you don't know... The Revenge of Stroggos website has been updated with a new version of the Navy SEALs 2 mod for Quake II, making use of the recently released Quake II source code, as well as a modified version of the Quake II source, though the latter is only available for Linux. Expect a Revenge of Stroggos update, as well.

A new beta version 1.25 of Demo Show Creator Light is now available, offering Quake III Arena 1.31 support. This demo playback utility can now make use of the dm3, dm_48, dm_66, and dm_67 formats.

The French Frag Factory Files page has what's described as the smallest Quake III Arena demo playback utility ever, which, considering the utility is simply a batch file, is probably a tough claim to dispute.

Macworld's Q&A with Trent Reznor offers some speculation that the NIN front-man may be contributing to the soundtrack of the new DOOM game, just as he did for the original Quake.

The DooM Legacy Home Site now offers Linux and DOS beta versions 1.32 of DooM Legacy and its source, which was previously only available for Windows. The documents for this latest version of their program based on the publicly-available source code for id Software's DOOM are not yet ready, but they have provided a few tips on how it can benefit map authors. Likewise, a new version 1.11.1 of Vavoom, modestly described as "the most advanced DOOM/Heretic/Hexen source port around," is also now available, the main changes being internal improvements to the VavoomC programming language.

There's a new version 0.91 of the Dark Conjunction mod. The update to this single-player Quake III Arena modification adds a save/load at the beginning of levels, a new Hulk attack, and a new introductory story, as well as a bunch of bug fixes.

crt0's ub3r1337 dc dev site is host to downloads of a Dreamcast port of Wolfenstein 3-D, id Software's seminal first-person shooter that has since been followed-up by Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The port is described as an early beta that still has several outstanding bugs, but these are not felt to present major problems playing the game. There is a download of the full shareware, as well as another that can make use of all six episodes for those who already own the registered version.

There's a new Seismovision Demo Viewer on PlanetQuake3.net updating this utility to version 1.20. The new release adds Quake (1), Quake II, and Unreal Tournament demo support to the program's Quake III Arena and Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force support, as well as a few enhancements and bug-fixes.

A new version 1.0.4 of the Z-Camera modification for Quake III that adds a FLIC mode and a SWING mode to the game's spectator options that allow you to focus on a single player or on the most interesting action at any given moment. The new release fixes a crashing bug and adds some user-inspired modifications.

The DOOM Legacy Homepage now offers anew version 1.32 beta 4 of the DOOM Legacy project, which is based on the publicly -available source-code for id Software's DOOM. The new release is for Win32 only, with versions for other operating systems promised to follow.

Based upon the public release of the Quake II source code, the debut release of aaquake2 (Text Mode Quake II) is now available, offering the same unusual text-based approach to the game as the original ttyquake. Why? "...as the author of ttyquake put it, 'If you have to ask why, you're not a member of the intended audience.'"

There's an Unreal 2 Preview on Computer and Video Games based on a visit to the offices of Legend Entertainment to check out progress on the upcoming FPS sequel. Amidst their complaints about traveling, the article offers first-hand impressions of the game, describing the experience of playing Unreal II comparable to the first time out with Half-Life, which left them "overwhelmed by just how much better it was than every other FPS out there."
