id Software designer Graeme Devine
updated his .plan with a progress report on the Mac OS X version of the
Return to Castle Wolfenstein Multiplayer Test, which will finally see a public
release today, as well as a bit on OS X DOOM, and "a native Cocoa 7th Guest
client that plays the game if you have the CDs." Here's the poop:
Well, I've been getting a few hundred emails a day from people testing
the OS X build of RTCW. Thanks for ALL the feedback, unbelievably positive.
I've done my best to keep up with all of you in replying, but this morning,
with 413 still unread, it's a wee bit daunting. Thanks also for all the icons,
wallpapers, and so forth.
I'll be putting up a full public installer today. We've moved the network
protocol on internally, which makes making a compatible builds from here on in
much harder, but a bunch of the bugs found by the OS X testers helped greatly
in tracking down general bugs for all platforms.
It's time for me to get back to DOOM stuff, I've been coding for it under OS X
btw, using the builds of 10.1 that Apple has been dropping to me. 10.1 is an
excellent OS. I can't wait for MS Office under X native as well.
Next up for my spare time I think I'm going to finish off this little side
project.. it's a native Cocoa 7th Guest client that plays the game if you have
the CDs. I get a lot of requests for that, and Trilobyte is still around
kicking, owned by me and owns all the rights, so perhaps one day something
will happen there.

An update to the "Ask a Screenwriter" portion of the latest
Ask @ IMDb.com written by John
August clarifies some misconceptions about the planned movie based on American
McGee's Alice, including the fact that the potential film's current title is
Alice, rather than Dark Wonderland, as had been reported. The report
goes on to further clarify that Alice is "a long ways away from casting"
so reports that Natalie Portman, Eliza Dushku, or anyone else is starring are
likewise erroneous, and in a third bit of debunking, John points out that
assumptions that he is writing the script are also incorrect, but are based on
the fact that he wrote the film's treatment. The report does conclude, however,
with his opinion that the film will indeed be made, saying: "Currently, the
producers are working with other writers to come up with the script, so I have
no idea how close they are to being able to film. While some projects do get
lost in development hell, my instinct is that Alice will get made at some
point."

Microsoft delays Xbox launch (thanks ZYirAH) is a BBC report on a one week
delay in Microsoft's upcoming Xbox console system "just five weeks after the
company rigorously denied an analyst's warning that the launch that would mark
its move from software making into hardware making would be delayed." No
official reason is offered for the delay, though the article quotes Gartner
researcher P.J. McNealy as saying "This is clearly a production issue." The
system, originally planned to go on sale in the US on November 8, is now slated
to be available November 15. In a related note,
Xbox Manufacturing Underway for Nov. 15 Launch Date is a press release we've

sound like business as usual, and makes no reference to the delay.

has the announcement that in addition to the Black & White Creature Isles add-on
mentioned in the next story, production is already underway on a full-blown
Black & White sequel. The premise here is that your peaceful island is no longer
so peaceful, and the player in his role as a not very omnipotent god must step

of these huge, quite vicious wars going on, and you as a god returning to this
land that you left in peace at the end of Black & White having to choose a
side." They describe gameplay as offering many RTS elements, and to assist you
in your efforts to influence the outcome are your ability to create miracles,
and the actions of your creature, who can be imported from the original B&W. No
release date has been set, and the report notes that: "Peter also assured us

MAF-Soft Update Patches has a version of the Quake III Arena 1.29h patch
that will only work on version 1.29g, as opposed to the "real" patch which can

at your own risk.
Obviously, any game done with the new Doom engine is going to run slower
than a game done with Q3 technology. You can make some of it back up by going
to the simpler lighting model and running at a lower resolution, but you just
won't be able to hit 60+ fps on a GF2. The low end of our supported platforms
will be a GF1 / 64 bit GF2Go / Radeon, and it is expected to chug a bit there,
even with everything cut down.
There are several more Q3 engine games in the works that will continue to run
great on existing systems, and Doom is still a long ways off in any case, so
there will be a lot more upgrades and new systems. We are aiming to have a GF3
run Doom with all features enabled at 30 fps. We expect the high end cards at
the time of release to run it at 60+ fps with improved quality. This is an
intentionally lower average FPS for the hardware cross section than we
targeted for Q3, but still higher than we targeted Q2 and earlier games
(before hardware acceleration was prevalent).
In the GLQuake days, light maps were considered an extravagance ("Render the
entire screen TWICE? Are you MAD?"), and some unfortunate hardware companies
just thought increased performance meant higher resolutions and more triangles
instead of more complex pixel operations. Five passes sounds like a lot right
now, but it will be just as quaint as dual texturing in the near future. I am
quite looking forward to 100+ operations per interaction in future work.
ProMode.Org has the
release of a new version 99v of the Challenge Pro Mode Arena modification for

A post to Promode.Org
offers "Quick notes on 1.29g, and a very cool trick with
demos" following-up on the recent release of the Quake III Arena version
1.29g patch. Since mouse sensitivity was changed in the new release (they cover
the argument over whether this is now fixed or broken), they offer the key info
that some unhappy folks seem to be missing in the documentation on how to revert
your mouse's behavior back to the way it was under Q3A 1.17, 1.27h, and 1.29f by
setting the "in_mouse" cvar to -1, while setting it back to 1 will use the newer
(1.27g, 1.29g) mouse code. They also mention work on a " very cool trick with
demos" that allows a client record a single demo in a one-on-one match that
includes the point of view of each of the players.
